Question:

I have a small problem, one of my blue chicks has a gray mouth. One of the others is also beginning to show signs of this. They are not skinny and they seem healthy in all other ways. Do you know what this is?

Answer:

Manny, the chick with the gray mouth probably has "Mouth and Crop mycosis". The treatment is:

1. Swab the mouth with liquid Vitamin B-1 2. Administer copper sulfate (1:2000) in drinking water for 1 to 3 days OR administer by dose syringe 10 to 20 cc per dose 3 times daily for 3 days. (Dilution of copper-sulfate crystals is 1 gram to 1/2 gallon of water = 1:2000). 3. If necessary, add Mycostatin -20 to feed for 2 to 4 weeks. 4. Keep birds dewormed. 5. Suggest that the whole flock be medicated with the copper-sulfate treatment.
