United Peafowl Variety List

The UPA approved a new peafowl variety list at the 2005 convention.
The new list is a complete listing of all peafowl varieties possible at this time.
This list is intended to help breeders have a more consistent listing of their peafowl.
Included in this list are Pavo Muticus and Pavo Cristatus. These two are listed separately as well as the Hybrid variety "Spalding". The name "Spalding" was given to this variety due to Mrs. Keith Spalding, who was the first person to mate together the two peafowl species Muticus and Cristatus.
In the India Peafowl there are ten colors and five different patterns. These colors and patterns make up 10 varieties for each the India and Spalding Peafowl.
The India varieties are listed with color first; then pattern, (if multiple patterns, then the oldest pattern is listed first with each different pattern listed in next sequence of existence).
Hybrid varieties are listed with Spalding name first, then color, then pattern (if multiple patterns, then the oldest pattern is listed first with each different pattern listed in next sequence of existence).
The varieties that have been omitted from the new list are Oaten, Red Buff and Emerald. The new list eliminates two names for the same color.

Example: Cameo Black Shoulder is the correct name for the Oaten;
Spalding Black Shoulder is the correct name for the Red Buff Spalding.

Emerald is not used in the Hybrids now, because many Spaldings are bred for Phenotype, not green blood and may not be a high percentage of Green blood.
Many Spaldings were represented as Emerald that were not actually a high percentage of Green but would show the green characteristic due to the variables from breeding Hybrids.
If a breeder wants to have the "Percentage of green blood" listed this can be added to the end of that variety".
At the present time about half of these varieties already exist and more are being developed.
